Have you ever heard of, or been on, a Jesus date?
Just as the name states, it is simply a date with Jesus. A special time carved out just to focus on your relationship with your best friend.
It sounds simple. Unless you’re an adult, or a parent, or a child, or a human that lives on planet Earth, right!? Who has time for that?
I can relate. I hadn’t been on a Jesus date for over a year.
But when my Monday morning this week unexpectedly opened up, sadly because the doctor I work for was sick, I found myself with my entire morning open with nothing scheduled! As a chronic scheduler, this doesn’t happen
So I went back home after dropping the kids off at school and talking with work, started the laundry on my way by the laundry room and then aimlessly drifted between the kitchen and bathroom, unsettled as to what to do with this newfound window in my schedule. When suddenly, eggs and hot cakes cried out to me from a nearby restaurant!
So I grabbed my Bible and my notebook and headed out the door! Just 5 minutes later I was settling into my favorite corner booth and ordering the full breakfast with an omelet, hash browns and the hot cakes! Don’t judge me, it was my cheat day. But the very best part of this outing was not the food, it was the company. Wait, what? Did I pick someone up on the way to the restaurant that I forgot to report? Nope. My company came with me, He’s always with me.
I sat in my beloved booth for the next 2 hours and prayed and read my Bible and filled a ton of pages in my notebook with new ideas and old thoughts that needed to be dealt with and as the time passed I could literally feel myself drawing nearer and nearer to my beloved friend I envisioned across the table.
If you’ve been living with Jesus for very long you know backsliding happens. I had begun to backslide, ever so slowly, for the past few months and then Influenza B hit me and put me on my back for almost 2 weeks and I almost completely disconnected, focusing on surviving the illness and caring for my sick family.
So in the few hours I sat in that cozy booth and the sweetest waitress took care of my physical needs, Jesus sat right with me and took care of my spiritual needs.
by the time I left the sky was brighter and my steps were lighter.
Just like any other relationship in our lives, we must make time together a priority or it’s easy to drift apart. And hopefully you aren’t a chronic scheduler with little or no white space in your schedule like me, but if you are, pencil in a date with Jesus, make it a priority, get a sitter if you need to and find your favorite spot. Mine is the corner booth in a truck stop restaurant, but yours may be your local library or even a quite corner of your home when you can detach from the laundry and the dishes and all your responsibilities and just spend time with your best friend. Because, trust me, this is a relationship you don’t want to get stale, it’s too precious and life is so much sweeter when we draw near to the one that loves us more than any ever will, more than we can even fathom.
So where and when will your next Jesus date be? Let me know in the comments below!
Enjoy, my friends.
God bless,
Katie
